Warning signs Fareskilt

Glatt kjørebane — Slippery road

Slippery road Glatt kjørebane

Glatt kjørebane Slippery road

sign skilt 116

Warns of a slippery road surface because of conditions particular to this place.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: Warning signs in Norway are red-bordered triangles with no text: they warn, they never order, so there is no number on the sign to obey. «På grunn av særlige forhold» means the slipperiness is a local peculiarity — a bridge deck, a tunnel mouth, shade that holds the frost — which is why the sign can stand in summer as well. Slow down and read the surface instead of waiting for a speed limit.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 4 (de enkelte fareskilt), skilt 116

Farlig vegkryss — Dangerous junction

Dangerous junction Farlig vegkryss

Farlig vegkryss Dangerous junction

sign skilt 124

Warns of a dangerous junction where the ordinary rule applies: you must give way to traffic coming from the right.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: Read it as «heads up», not as a priority sign — § 4's own wording says the ordinary right-hand rule still applies here («vanlig vikeplikt overfor kjørende fra høyre»), so nothing has been taken off you and nothing given. It is not the same sign as the identically shaped 210 «Forkjørskryss», which warns that traffic on the side road is put under a duty to give way to you.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 4 (de enkelte fareskilt), skilt 124

Barn — Children

Children Barn

Barn Children

sign skilt 142

Warns of a place on or beside the road where children often walk or spend time — tied to a school, kindergarten, playground or the like.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: The triangle marks where children are, not a crossing point and not a speed: § 4 ties it to schools, kindergartens and playgrounds («e.l.»), so expect children on foot beside the carriageway as well as crossing it. Children step out from behind parked cars and misjudge speed, so lift off, cover the brake and keep the speed low for the whole stretch, not only at the sign.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 4 (de enkelte fareskilt), skilt 142

Syklende — Cyclists

Cyclists Syklende

Syklende Cyclists

sign skilt 144

Warns of a place where cyclists often cross or come out into the road — or that cyclists are in the tunnel.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: The same sign covers two situations: cyclists crossing or joining the road here, and cyclists sharing the carriageway inside a tunnel, where there is no room beside them. Expect them from both directions, look for them before turning across a cycle path or lane, and give them room when you pass — they travel faster than pedestrians and are easy to miss against a wet road.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 4 (de enkelte fareskilt), skilt 144

Dyr — Animals (elk / moose)

Animals (elk / moose) Dyr

Dyr Animals (elk / moose)

sign skilt 146

Warns that animals often cross or walk along the road.

Skiltet varsler at dyr ofte ferdes over eller langs vegen.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: The animal version of the warning triangle, and the sentence in § 4 is the same for every animal: they often walk over or along the road here. The regulation lists five variants (146.1–146.5) without naming them; the national sign-number code list names 146.1 «Elg», which is the artwork used here (the others are rein, hjort, ku, sau). An elk is tall enough to come over the bonnet and can be impossible to stop for at speed, so slow down and scan the verge, especially at dusk and dawn.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 4 (de enkelte fareskilt), skilt 146

Møtende trafikk — Two-way traffic

Two-way traffic Møtende trafikk

Møtende trafikk Two-way traffic

sign skilt 148

Warns that the carriageway carries traffic in both directions.

Skiltet varsler at kjørebanen har kjørende trafikk i begge retninger.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: You meet this where the road changes character: the end of a stretch of one-way driving, or a slip road leaving a motorway. From here on the lane you are in also carries oncoming vehicles, so keep to the right-hand side and expect someone coming towards you where you would expect nobody. Passing another vehicle is now the ordinary two-way manoeuvre, judged on sight distance, not the motorway habit of staying in lane.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 4 (de enkelte fareskilt), skilt 148

Prohibition signs Forbudsskilt

Innkjøring forbudt — No entry

No entry Innkjøring forbudt

Innkjøring forbudt No entry

sign skilt 302

No driving past this sign — vehicles must not enter the road from this direction. Cycling and the use of small electric motor vehicles on the pavement may still be allowed under the traffic rules.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: Red disc with a white bar means «no entry» — not the same as «one way». In Norway you meet it at the exit of one-way streets and at closed road sections.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 8 (de enkelte forbudsskilt), skilt 302

Forbudt for alle kjøretøy — No vehicles

No vehicles Forbudt for alle kjøretøy

Forbudt for alle kjøretøy No vehicles

sign skilt 306.0

All vehicles (motorised or not) are prohibited from driving past the sign.

All kjøretøy er forbudt å kjøre forbi skiltet.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: The empty circle with a red ring bans everything with wheels — motor vehicles, bicycles and e-scooters alike.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 8 (de enkelte forbudsskilt), skilt 306.0

Forbudt for motorvogn med unntak av liten elektrisk motorvogn — No motor vehicles

No motor vehicles Forbudt for motorvogn med unntak av liten elektrisk motorvogn

Forbudt for motorvogn med unntak av liten elektrisk motorvogn No motor vehicles

sign skilt 306.1

Motor vehicles must not drive past the sign; small electric motor vehicles (e-scooters) are exempt.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: Norway's «no motor vehicles» sign. Sub-plates below can add further exceptions — read them before driving on.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 8 (de enkelte forbudsskilt), skilt 306.1

Forbudt for lastebil og trekkbil — No lorries or tractor units

No lorries or tractor units Forbudt for lastebil og trekkbil

Forbudt for lastebil og trekkbil No lorries or tractor units

sign skilt 306.5

Lorries and tractor units must not drive past the sign. The 306 series shows the road user it applies to as a symbol.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: If you drive a van or a lorry, check the 306.x variant carefully: 306.4 is motorcycles and mopeds, 306.5 is lorries and tractor units, 306.6 cyclists and 306.7 pedestrians.

sign skilt 310

Vehicles with more than two wheels whose permitted total weight is higher than the number shown (in tonnes, e.g. 3,5 t) must not drive past.

Forbud for motorvogn med flere enn to hjul med tillatt totalvekt høyere enn tallet på skiltet (oppgitt i tonn, f.eks. 3,5 t).

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: The limit is on the vehicle's permitted total weight, not on how loaded you are. Tractor units count as part of the combination's permitted weight.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 8 (de enkelte forbudsskilt), skilt 310

Breddegrense — Width limit

Width limit Breddegrense

Breddegrense Width limit

sign skilt 312

Vehicles (including their load) wider than the number shown must not drive past.

Forbud for kjøretøy, medregnet gods, med større bredde enn angitt.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: Includes any load sticking out — common at narrow bridges and roadworks.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 8 (de enkelte forbudsskilt), skilt 312

Høydegrense — Height limit

Height limit Høydegrense

Høydegrense Height limit

sign skilt 314

Vehicles (including their load) taller than the number shown must not drive past.

Forbud for kjøretøy, medregnet gods, med større høyde enn angitt.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: Applies to total height including roof loads — check it before tunnels and old bridges.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 8 (de enkelte forbudsskilt), skilt 314

Lengdegrense — Length limit

Length limit Lengdegrense

Lengdegrense Length limit

sign skilt 316

Vehicles or vehicle combinations (including load) longer than the number shown must not drive past.

Forbud for kjøretøy eller vogntog, medregnet gods, med større lengde enn angitt.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: Watch this with a caravan or trailer: it is the total length of your combination that counts.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 8 (de enkelte forbudsskilt), skilt 316

Totalvektgrense for vogntog — Total weight limit for vehicle combinations

Total weight limit for vehicle combinations Totalvektgrense for vogntog

Totalvektgrense for vogntog Total weight limit for vehicle combinations

sign skilt 318.2

Vehicle combinations whose actual total weight exceeds the number shown are prohibited; a single vehicle heavier than the limit is also prohibited.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: Here the ACTUAL current weight counts (unlike sign 310, which uses permitted total weight).

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 8 (de enkelte forbudsskilt), skilt 318.2

Stopp for angitt formål — Stop for the stated purpose

Stop for the stated purpose Stopp for angitt formål

Stopp for angitt formål Stop for the stated purpose

sign skilt 324

You must stop for the purpose written on the sign (for example a checkpoint) before driving on.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: Used at checkpoints and inspections; the text on the sign states what the stop is for.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 8 (de enkelte forbudsskilt), skilt 324

Forbikjøringsforbud — No overtaking

No overtaking Forbikjøringsforbud

Forbikjøringsforbud No overtaking

sign skilt 334

No overtaking of motor vehicles with more than two wheels. The ban lasts until the end-of-ban sign or the distance shown on a sub-plate.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: Overtaking a two-wheeler is not covered by the ban; overtaking on the right where the rules allow it is also exempt.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 8 (de enkelte forbudsskilt), skilt 334

Slutt på forbikjøringsforbud — End of no overtaking

End of no overtaking Slutt på forbikjøringsforbud

Slutt på forbikjøringsforbud End of no overtaking

sign skilt 336

The overtaking ban ends here.

Forbikjøringsforbudet opphører her.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: Grey/white «end» sign — no red ring. Normal overtaking rules apply again after it.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 8 (de enkelte forbudsskilt), skilt 336

Fartsgrense 30 km/t — Speed limit 30 km/h

Speed limit 30 km/h Fartsgrense 30 km/t

Fartsgrense 30 km/t Speed limit 30 km/h

sign skilt 362

Maximum permitted speed: 30 km/h.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: 30 zones are common around schools and in residential streets — often with speed bumps.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 8 (de enkelte forbudsskilt), skilt 362

Fartsgrense 50 km/t — Speed limit 50 km/h

Speed limit 50 km/h Fartsgrense 50 km/t

Fartsgrense 50 km/t Speed limit 50 km/h

sign skilt 362

Maximum permitted speed: 50 km/h.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: 50 km/h is also Norway's general speed limit in built-up areas (tettbygd strøk), so limits inside towns are often not signed at all.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 8 (de enkelte forbudsskilt), skilt 362

Fartsgrense 60 km/t — Speed limit 60 km/h

Speed limit 60 km/h Fartsgrense 60 km/t

Fartsgrense 60 km/t Speed limit 60 km/h

sign skilt 362

Maximum permitted speed: 60 km/h.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: The limit stays in force until another speed-limit sign or an end sign appears, or you pass a junction where it is re-signed.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 8 (de enkelte forbudsskilt), skilt 362

Fartsgrense 80 km/t — Speed limit 80 km/h

Speed limit 80 km/h Fartsgrense 80 km/t

Fartsgrense 80 km/t Speed limit 80 km/h

sign skilt 362

Maximum permitted speed: 80 km/h.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: 80 km/h is also Norway's general limit outside built-up areas, so rural roads are often unsigned at 80.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 8 (de enkelte forbudsskilt), skilt 362

Stans forbudt — No stopping

No stopping Stans forbudt

Stans forbudt No stopping

sign skilt 370

No stopping on the side of the road where the sign stands. Applies until the next junction or a new parking/stopping sign.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: Nordic style: blue disc with red ring and cross. «Stans» means any voluntary stop, even a short one — so no pulling over to drop off passengers.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 8 (de enkelte forbudsskilt), skilt 370

Parkering forbudt — No parking

No parking Parkering forbudt

Parkering forbudt No parking

sign skilt 372

No parking on the side of the road where the sign stands. Applies until the next junction or a new parking/stopping sign.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: Blue disc with one red slash. Unlike «no stopping», a brief stop to let passengers out is allowed. Sub-plates often add time windows, exemptions or extent (arrows) — read them.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 8 (de enkelte forbudsskilt), skilt 372

Parkeringssone — Parking zone

Parking zone Parkeringssone

Parkeringssone Parking zone

sign skilt 376

Marks an area where special parking or stopping rules apply (shown by symbols and text on the sign). Lasts until the «End of parking zone» sign.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: Read the whole sign: zones often mean resident parking or time-limited parking, and the rules apply to every street inside the zone.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 8 (de enkelte forbudsskilt), skilt 376

Information signs Opplysningsskilt

Motorveg — Motorway

Motorway Motorveg

Motorveg Motorway

sign skilt 502

The sign turns the traffic rules' motorway provisions on, and they stay on until sign 504 «Slutt på motorveg», sign 503 «Motortrafikkveg», or the junction where an exit ramp from the motorway meets a road that is not a motorway.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: In Norway «motorveg» is a legal category, and this blue rectangle with the road-and-bridge symbol is what switches it on — nothing in the rules asks you to judge it by how the road looks. Note how it ends, too: the text lists three endings, and one of them is the quiet one — the junction where an exit ramp meets a road that is no longer motorway. So the motorway provisions can stop at your slip road while the road you just left stays a motorway. The sign states none of the rules itself; it points at Trafikkreglene.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 12 (de enkelte opplysningsskilt), skilt 502

Kollektivfelt — Bus lane (kollektivfelt)

Bus lane (kollektivfelt) Kollektivfelt

Kollektivfelt Bus lane (kollektivfelt)

sign skilt 508

Marks the start of a bus lane (kollektivfelt) and puts the traffic rules' bus-lane provisions in force.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: This is the lane rule people get fined over, and it is narrower than it looks: a bus with up to 16 passenger seats besides the driver's seat may only use the lane while running licensed passenger transport or while carrying at least 7 passengers besides the driver, and a taxi only when it carries a roof sign. So «I am allowed, there is a bus behind me» is not the test — the text is. The lane ends at sign 510 «Slutt på kollektivfelt» or at the first junction, and a direction sign that assigns the lane to something else also cancels it. The artwork shipped here is the 508.1 variant, the one the regulation publishes for buses; 508.2 is the bus-and-taxi face.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 12 (de enkelte opplysningsskilt), skilt 508

Gangfelt — Pedestrian crossing

Pedestrian crossing Gangfelt

Gangfelt Pedestrian crossing

sign skilt 516

Marks a crossing place for pedestrians where the traffic rules' provisions on gangfelt apply.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: The sign says one thing: this spot is a «gangfelt», a place set out for pedestrians to cross, and the rules for that word apply here. Learn the word itself — gang = walking, felt = lane/strip — because the Norwegian theory test and the road signs both use it, and English words like «zebra crossing» will not match what you read. On many Norwegian roads this sign and the stripes in the surface are the only two things that mark the crossing.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 12 (de enkelte opplysningsskilt), skilt 516

Gang- og sykkelveg — Shared foot and cycle path

Shared foot and cycle path Gang- og sykkelveg

Gang- og sykkelveg Shared foot and cycle path

sign skilt 522

Marks a way built for pedestrians, cyclists and riders of small electric vehicles, and puts the traffic rules' provisions on using such a way in force.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: This is the shared path, next to the road rather than part of it. Read it as a family: 518 is pedestrians only, 520 and 521 are for cyclists only, and 522 — this one — is both. The regulation's own sentence also names «fører av liten elektrisk motorvogn», the e-scooter rider, as one of the path's users, which is worth noticing if e-scooters are not part of traffic law where you come from. The sign is about who the path was built for; how the groups share it comes from Trafikkreglene.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 12 (de enkelte opplysningsskilt), skilt 522

Envegskjøring — One-way traffic

One-way traffic Envegskjøring

Envegskjøring One-way traffic

sign skilt 526

Driving is allowed only in the direction the arrow shows, and only as far as the first junction.

Skiltet angir at kjøring bare er tillatt i pilens retning fram til første vegkryss.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: Read it as a permission with an end, not as a description of the street: driving is allowed only the way the arrow points, and only until the first junction — after that a new sign has to tell you what applies. The arrow is the rule, so a panel pointing the other way is a different sign, not the same sign from another angle. The archive publishes 526 in two mountings, named by the national sign-number code list as 526.1 «plassert vinkelrett» (perpendicular, the tall 114 × 180 pt panel used here) and 526.2 «plassert parallelt»; § 12 gives both the same sentence.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 12 (de enkelte opplysningsskilt), skilt 526

Parkering — Parking

Parking Parkering

Parkering Parking

sign skilt 552

Parking is allowed here, as long as it does not conflict with the traffic rules on stopping and parking.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: The blue P grants something rather than forbids it: where the ordinary rules leave you unsure whether you may park, this sign says yes. The grant is bounded, and the same § 12 entry spells out the edges: outside a specially delimited area such as a car park, it applies only on the side of the road where the sign stands, it ends at the next junction or at a new parking sign, and an addendum panel reserving the spaces for one group of users makes parking forbidden for everybody else. Where an addendum shows the extent of the regulation, parking in the direction shown is allowed even where the general stopping and parking rules would say no.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 12 (de enkelte opplysningsskilt), skilt 552

Mandatory signs Påbudsskilt

Påbudt kjøreretning — Mandatory direction of travel

Mandatory direction of travel Påbudt kjøreretning

Påbudt kjøreretning Mandatory direction of travel

sign skilt 402

You must leave the junction in the direction shown on the sign.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: In Norway the round blue disc is the «you must» shape — the mirror image of the red-ringed prohibition signs. Which way you may leave the junction is read from the arrow alone, and the regulation illustrates eight variants (402.1–402.8): straight ahead, left, right and combinations of them. Read the arrow before you pick a lane.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 10 (de enkelte påbudsskilt), skilt 402

Påbudt kjørefelt — Mandatory lane

Mandatory lane Påbudt kjørefelt

Påbudt kjørefelt Mandatory lane

sign skilt 404

Pass the sign on the side the arrow points to.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: Blue disc with a single diagonal arrow, and unlike the signs that regulate a whole street it is about the spot right in front of you: pass on the side the arrow points to. The two official variants (404.1 and 404.2) are mirror images, so read the arrow rather than following the car in front.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 10 (de enkelte påbudsskilt), skilt 404

Påbudt rundkjøring — Mandatory roundabout

Mandatory roundabout Påbudt rundkjøring

Påbudt rundkjøring Mandatory roundabout

sign skilt 406

The sign makes the roundabout obligatory at this point: you must drive the roundabout.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: Blue disc with white arrows circling the centre. The regulation's entry for 406 is the name only — no further text — so the whole requirement is «drive the roundabout here». When the direction inside the roundabout has to be spelled out, the regulation has a separate sign for it: 408 «Påbudt kjøreretning i rundkjøring».

Give-way and priority signs Vikeplikt- og forkjørsskilt

Vikeplikt — Give way

Give way Vikeplikt

Vikeplikt Give way

sign skilt 202

You must give way to traffic on the road you are joining, in both directions.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: Norway's default rule at unsigned junctions is «give way to the right»; this sign means you must give way to all traffic on the crossing road, from both directions. No text on the sign.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 6 (de enkelte vikeplikt- og forkjørsskilt), skilt 202

Stopp — Stop

Stop Stopp

Stopp Stop

sign skilt 204

Come to a complete standstill before entering the crossing road or crossing a level crossing; give way to traffic in both directions (and to trains/trams at level crossings).

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: A full standstill is mandatory even when the road looks empty. Stop behind the stop line, or as close to the crossing road as possible. This is the only octagonal sign in Norway.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 6 (de enkelte vikeplikt- og forkjørsskilt), skilt 204

Forkjørsveg — Priority road

Priority road Forkjørsveg

Forkjørsveg Priority road

sign skilt 206

You are on a priority road: traffic from side roads and crossing roads must give way to you. It lasts until the «End of priority road» sign or a yield/stop sign.

⚠️ Norsk versjon mangler – engelsk tekst: The yellow diamond is the Nordic priority-road sign. It grants right of way at junctions — do not read it as a warning sign.

FOR-2005-10-07-1219 § 6 (de enkelte vikeplikt- og forkjørsskilt), skilt 206

Slutt på forkjørsveg — End of priority road

End of priority road Slutt på forkjørsveg

Slutt på forkjørsveg End of priority road

sign skilt 208

Your priority ends — the normal give-way-to-the-right rule applies again.
